Colonial coinage generally refers to circulation money in the British American colonies from as early as 1652 to just before the Federal Mint opened for operations in 1792. Meanwhile, post-Colonial coinage includes privately struck coins or tokens that were minted in the United States in the years immediately after 1776 or coins that were manufactured as prototype coinage or proposal pieces for the federal government.
